Was tempted to make a 21+ writer’s discord server earlier…. like fanfic writers and such but I also know that an ao3 writers server literally JUST opened so I don’t want to seem like I snagged their idea

I had the idea like on my way home from work and a couple hrs after I get home I see that someone opened a general ao3 writers server so like if I made my own now it’d seem like I took their idea 🧍‍♂️

I think a 21+ and anti censorship place is still very much needed and welcome! I’d love to be a part of it if you want to start one!

Update: I made one! https://discord.gg/qU3k6QEchX

Lmao I caved and decided why not. I am the only one modding currently so all I ask is for a bit of patience 😅

ArtFight is such a fun concept and ngl I wish there was a writer’s version :/ like it’d be so fun to send each other little snippets of fics about our OCs because I’m kinda curious to see how others would portray them

So you’re new to witchcraft and paganism. Or maybe you’ve been practicing for a while already. Either way, this post might be helpful, so as usual take what you’d like from this.

When starting off with this path in life, you might find yourself getting super excited. “Oh, what should I learn?” “Where do I start?” “I want to know 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨” so you start gathering all your information and making a book of shadows. Putting as much information as you can find into this physical or digital book, because that is what you should do, right? Gather everything first and then figure it all out later.

I wouldn’t say so.

There are tons of posts in this community about “things to add to your book of shadows” and they’re good posts to find some ideas, but I wouldn’t rely solely on those posts to figure out what you want to add to your BOS. They’ve got it all broken down into sections and with timelines. Highlighting what’s important and what’s not so important. It can be a little overwhelming! So many things to learn and it feels like you have to make so much progress in so little time.

Take a step back and really look at your practice, instead of taking these posts as the only starting point.

Think of it a little like college…

What do you want to major in? What do you want to minor in? If you even want to add a minor.

or

What do you want to focus on primarily in your practice? Is it witchcraft specifically? Or maybe just paganism? What are some minor focuses you want within your practice?

Really think about some of these questions, and instead of learning everything under the sun, focus on the specifics of what you want your practice to look like. Match your book of shadows to fit your practice. Because I will say this in almost every post of mine, everyone’s practice is different. So if you’re learning everything just to know it but it doesn’t apply to your practice then it’ll just feel like wasted time. If it doesn’t apply to your practice, why do you need to force yourself to learn it?

Just like in college, you 𝙘𝙖𝙣 change your mind about what you want to do with your practice. You are allowed to learn something new because what you started off with just doesn’t fit. That’s how the real world works. You find an interest in something and decide to pursue that interest. After getting a bit of experience, you might find that maybe that thing you liked doesn’t fit so well anymore. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵.

When I’d first decided to finally get into witchcraft and paganism, I wanted to learn everything and anything that I could. I bought a journal and wrote out whatever information that was suggested to me because I was a beginner. I needed to protect myself and I needed to know everything, right?

Well….wrong.

A lot of what I wrote down when I first started out? It’s pretty much useless to me at this stage in my practice. I have no use for a majority of those pages I had written three years prior and it sucks just a little bit. I spent all that time finding information and writing it down for it to be left unused and unnecessary. So now I’m currently taking the time to really look at what interests me and focusing my time on learning more about those things rather than continuing to learn what was previously suggested.

For my practice currently, I don’t actually do much witchcraft. Spells, curses, hexes, and all those things do not interest me and do not serve a purpose in my practice so I do not consider myself a witch. I do not use crystals, study astrology, or pay much attention to the moon phases. Instead, I have more of a focus on paganism. Honoring the Greek gods and keeping my Catholic upbringing around because I cannot get rid of it. Focusing on Italian folk practice in simple terms. Even then I don’t have much of a label on my practice.

So during this journey of reflection, I’ve started a new book of shadows. Slowly I will fill it with information that fits my practice. Make it more personal to me rather than being something everyone has. This new journal will be filled with what I deem as necessary and I will enjoy decorating my book of shadows with whatever I feel like.

It is important to note that despite me encouraging you to learn what you want, there are some topics that are important to know. When looking through information it is important to know what is closed, what sources engage in cultural appropriation, and what is wrong. You do not need to know everything, but I strongly encourage you to try and be able to recognize what information and sources to avoid, as well as what practices you cannot incorporate into your own.

If you are unsure whether or not something is closed, please reach out and ask! We have many chats and a lot of members with experience who will be able to help.

Before I get into anything, I’d like to preface a couple things…

a) Please know your limits. things mentioned in here are suggestions, please don’t try anything that could potentially get yourself in trouble.

b) Some topics may be sort of heavy. As the title suggests I will be talking about Catholicism and the church.

Living in a Catholic household when you’re someone who isn’t fully interested in the beliefs anymore is a rough thing. Witchcraft can be interesting and cool but unfortunately has to be hidden away. As someone who also has to hide their craft while living in a Catholic household, here are some recommendations on how to practice secretly and also some other things I’ve had to learn throughout time.

image

So you likely have to hide your craft away. It sucks but it’s true. Luckily there are some ways to practice secretly. These are just a few that you can try and incorporate into your own practice.

Church

Going to church can be pretty rough especially when you aren’t exactly tied to those beliefs anymore, but unfortunately your family is still dragging you along. During mass, one thing you could do would be meditating. Focus on your breathing and do what you can. If you enjoy singing, you can still sing along with the mass songs. Just dedicate them to any deities you may worship. Some of those songs are really good.

Candles

Depending on your situation, you may or may not be allowed to have candles in your room. While they are a great little way for secretive spells or even having one in honor of your deity, having a candle may not be a privilege you have. Well, perhaps you could use a wax warmer instead. There are plenty of electronic ones that don’t use a candle flame to heat up the wax. There are a few shops online I’ve seen that even sell wax melts made with certain intentions.

But on the other hand, if you can have candles. They are an easy and secret way to honor any deities or even doing spells, as I have mentioned. They’re one of those things that can be hidden in plain sight. They’re easy to find and come in all different scents so you can find one that fits the intention you want.

Digital Witchcraft

Digital witchcraft is a thing! It’s another way you can hide your craft without having to hide all your tools. You can make a digital altar on Animal Crossing, or even utilize the community altar chat in this community. While I cannot go into too much detail on how digital witchcraft works, I’m sure there are many resources in this community that can provide a more in depth look into it.

Digital BOS

For this one I will say, be careful. A digital book of shadows can be a wonderful thing. Use Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or even just the bookmark function on your computer or other device. It’s an easy way to keep everything in one spot and can be a hidden resource. But also be smart with this especially if privacy is something you aren’t granted enough.

Hiding in plain sight

Candles were the first thing that I mentioned that can be something hidden in plain sight. Crystals can be another thing. If you’re someone who loves shiny or pretty things. Or if you’re honestly just someone who seems like you would collect crystals. Those are something easy to explain away. Plants too! If you can manage to keep plants in your room that is another thing that can be tied into witchcraft without being super obvious.

Dice or playing cards. Tarot cards are not a necessity for witchcraft but if you’re still interested in the divination aspect of things, try out divination using dice or playing cards. To replace a pendulum, use a necklace with a pendant or some sort of weight or even a coin. These are normal things to find in a household that don’t really scream ‘witchcraft’. Simple things like these, along with any other trinkets that you use in your craft can be left out as an altar without even seeming like one.

image

Now this part is probably one of the hardest things to deal with when leaving the Catholic faith. Everyone likely has different experiences when it comes to dealing with breaking out of certain mindsets that we’ve grown up with.

The Gods are not omniscient

When learning about The Lord, we learn that he is omniscient. Knowing anything and everything. Always there and within everything he created. He’s always listening and watching out for His people. Well, this isn’t necessarily true for the other gods. At least, it doesn’t seem like a common thing. Sure the gods are present and there, but they likely don’t know everything. They won’t be there with you at every second of every day. And you are more than okay to correct me if I am wrong, but this is pretty much how I see it.

You aren’t going to be punished for every little thing you do wrong

One thing that you find a lot, at least in the church’s teachings, is that if you are a sinner then you’re going to Hell. Or that God will punish you accordingly. Or whatever. You must follow the teachings of The Lord or you’ll suffer for it. Which is weird when he is also supposed to be a very forgiving god. Sending his son down to die for our sins and all that.

This also is not a huge thing for the gods. Granted I cannot speak for them but from what I’ve seen from others is that the gods won’t send you to eternal damnation just for mistakes made in your life. They won’t punish you for things that the church says are deserving of punishment. Of course, God also won’t be punishing you for really just being who you are. The bible does say that he forgives and loves all of his creation. You are also his creation if that is what you believe.

Prayer

╭─━━━━━━━━━━─╮

Prayer

noun

-a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or an object of worship

-an earnest hope or wish

╰─━━━━━━━━━━─╯

I’m throwing this under the beliefs section because prayer is whatever you believe it is. Plus this isn’t really an alternative, to be honest. Prayer was something that took a bit of time to wrap my head around, and also at least one therapy session. But it seems like praying can look different for everyone, that it means something different for everyone. What is your definition of prayer? And how would you say it ties into your practice?

For me personally, prayer is a conversation. It honestly always has been. It is me talking with the god or spirit that I intend to talk to. Structured prayers have always just seemed like part of a process for me. It never held much meaning, but when I’m doing personal prayers there is meaning and emotion. I say what I want to say rather than what I am told to say. Speaking out loud or even singing could be a prayer. So I ask again, what is prayer to you?

image

Now I just threw…quite a bit at you. So here are some things to maybe keep in mind.

Church teachings ≠ God’s teachings

Now this is mostly my own personal belief. But I don’t see some of the church’s teachings as what God intended. Maybe this is because of a bias or something along those lines. But there just seems to be way too much hate and ignorance within the Catholic church.

Now I was also raised in a pretty lax family when it came to the church and Catholic beliefs. My mom dubbing herself as a ‘cafeteria Catholic’ because she, in her words, picks and chooses which beliefs she wants to believe in. So from a young age I was pretty much shown that every belief within the church doesn’t necessarily have to be your own.

Stay respectful

Try to stay respectful towards the Catholic faith and The Lord. There are many people who still very much believe in this faith and while you can have your own feelings on the matter, try to respect others who wish to practice this faith. It’s true that it is not for everyone. Although there are still many people who are very much into the whole thing.

I also want to say that you should stay respectful to God. He is still very much a divine being that is deserving of respect just like all the other gods. Maybe don’t go bashing Him for everything that’s happened. But I understand that it is a hard thing to not turn all your anger on him. It’s something that is learned over time. It is something that I am still trying to learn myself. While I do respect Him, there is still quite a bit of anger that I know I need to work through.

Take your time

This is something I have said a lot and I’m sure you’re all sick of hearing it, but everyone’s practice is their own. Do not rush into things especially if you are still in a situation where you cannot practice freely. Take your time with your research. You don’t have to jump into spellwork or deity work right off the bat. Building your knowledge is just as important as everything else in witchcraft, if not more important. You will progress in your own time, it’s not a race so please don’t feel bad if you think you aren’t progressing because I will tell you right now that you are.

Things will get better

Being unable to practice openly sucks. I get that, I really do. Hiding away from your family and having beliefs you may fear will get you in trouble is not fun in the slightest. But guess what? You’ll move out one day. Get your own place and you’ll be able to practice as openly as you wish in your own home. Every family is different so I cannot speak for everyone’s situation. Just know that no matter what things will get better, in whatever form that is.

image

Well….that was a lot. Those are some recommendations that I have, if you have any others that you recommend please feel free to drop a comment! And as always, if I have said anything wrong please correct me on it. The last thing I want is to be spreading misinformation.

… but not really.

III. How do I know what devotional acts to do?

IV. Outro

└──── •✧• ────┘

image

It’s nothing new that devotional acts are a type of offering to deities. Although they’re an offering that doesn’t seem to be very utilized. At least from what I’ve seen, and I could be totally wrong! But for all those in the broom closet like me, maybe these types of offerings haven’t been explored much. They’re a great way to give offerings to your deities in secret.

image

Devotional acts are pretty much what they sound like. They’re things that you do for a deity that is related to their realm. It could be something like making a donation or doing something physical. You could wear an outfit out of devotion for your deity or put on makeup for them. Do things that relate to these deities with them in mind. If you’d like, say a prayer to the deity before doing this act.

You don’t need some extravagant altar for these devotional acts. No large, fancy, expensive offerings. Of course if this is the type of offering you enjoy providing, then go for it! Although for those who don’t have the means to do those offerings, maybe consider doing something out of devotion.

image

Research research research!

Look at what the deity rules over and their associations. Are they associated with the sea? Then wear something more tropical or even visit the beach if you can! Incorporate some blues or greens in your makeup. Whatever you feel is right. And there are sources that will also list some devotional acts that you can do!

Not sure about whether or not your devotional act is alright? Check-in with that deity! Communicate with them using whatever tool you’re comfortable using. Use your intuition. Everyone’s practice is different so one devotional act that you do could be something another practitioner would never even think about.

image

Devotional acts are certainly a good offering idea for any of those in the broom closet. It’s something that I often utilize in my practice especially because I cannot openly have any altars or offerings out. These acts could be something as simple as cleaning up your space/room or just simply dressing in a certain outfit for the day. They don’t have to be super extravagant.

The thing I will emphasize again is that every practice is unique. Do what devotional acts feel right to you. Don’t do what everyone else is doing. Don’t feel bad if you can’t buy deities any offerings. Do what you can and listen to your intuition.

Imposter Syndrome

Noun

the persistent inability to believe that one’s success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one’s own efforts or skills

image

┏ ┐

i. Introduction

ii. What is imposter syndrome?

iii. Some tips

iv. Outro

v. Sources

└ ┛

image

Imposter syndrome is quite honestly one of the worst things for my spiritual practice. There’s always the question of whether or not something was real or if I’m just being biased or imagining it. Is this deity actually reaching out or interested in working with me or am I forcing my beliefs onto them? I always find myself second-guessing moments in my spiritual practice. So if you’re like me and dealing with imposter syndrome, feel free to stick around.

image

The term “imposter syndrome” was originally introduced in the 1970s by Suzanna Imes and Pauline Rose Clance. Early research suggests that it only affected successful women but has since been proven to affect anyone. Imposter syndrome has many forms. The five types would be the perfectionist, the superhero, the expert, the natural genius, and the soloist. These are labels based on how imposter syndrome seems to affect your behavior and actions when responding to a certain type of stress.

Imposter Syndrome itself is essentially a type of self-doubt. “I was just lucky. I’m not *that* good at ___. If I don’t understand something immediately, then I’m just dumb.” These are the types of thoughts you may be experiencing with imposter syndrome. It can be a result of pressure from parents growing up, social anxiety, or personality traits even.

This is really baseline information, feel free to check out the sources listed below. Or perhaps search up imposter syndrome on your own.

image

Imposter syndrome sucks. It’s limiting especially when it comes to spiritual experiences. So these are some things that may help to keep in mind. Things that I try to remind myself of whenever I find myself struggling with my own form of imposter syndrome. Things I will definitely try and understand myself. This is a learning experience for the both of us.

Refuse to let it hold you back

Now this tip I actually snatched from one of the sources I used and I thought it was a good tip to include. This is actually something I try to remind myself of all the time. Often using the idea of “so what if it’s not completely real? I can still learn a valuable lesson from imagination.” This really goes with the fear of whether or not I’m communicating with an actual deity or whether or not I’m making up the entire interaction.

❦ ════ •⊰❂⊱• ════ ❦

Find a routine

I would say this is more of a ‘figure out your belief system and stick to it’. If you’re one of those people who say ‘Once is an accident, Twice is a coincidence, and three’s a pattern” then stick to that ideology. Limit the amount of doubt that can grow in your mind by sticking to a pattern. Shuffle your cards the same way every time if you need to. But if you need to do things a specific way in order to lessen that imposter syndrome, there’s nothing wrong with that!

❦ ════ •⊰❂⊱• ════ ❦

SPG is good validation

Personally, I wouldn’t say to stick only to SPG when doing things, especially if you do spirit or deity work. UPG is nice, everyone’s practice is their own and everyone’s relationships are different. But if you’re like me and constantly doubting every little thing then try and find things from your experience that count as SPG. BUT don’t limit everything to whether it’s SPG or not. Use it as a building block to gain that confidence.

❦ ════ •⊰❂⊱• ════ ❦

Stop comparing

Another good tip snatched from an outside source rather than my own thoughts. Although this is also where things get tricky. See in my last tip I say that SPG is good. Reach out to other members about their experiences with a deity but do not completely compare your experiences with theirs. Their relationship with a deity will be completely different from yours, so while you may be able to have some shared experiences with other members, remember that your relationship is your own and everything will not be the same.

❦ ════ •⊰❂⊱• ════ ❦

Check and Re-check

It’s always a good idea to double-check things. Sources are one thing that should be double-checked. But if you’re unsure on whether or not something is actually a sign or if something is the correct message, there are tools that are there to help. Confirm things with tarot or a pendulum. Ask for a very specific sign to be sent if you need. Even confirm things with other people through readings maybe.

❦ ════ •⊰❂⊱• ════ ❦

Trust in your intuition

Yes, this is probably the hardest thing to do with imposter syndrome. I am certainly yelled at by my friend to remember this all the time so this is me ‘yelling’ at you all about this. So let me ask…do things feel right? How are you feeling about the experience? Does it feel right? Comfortable, in a sense? Is this the situation actually wrong or is it just your anxiety speaking? If you’ve done things a certain way…then there’s no reason to doubt the results. Trust in yourself.

image

As mentioned multiple times before, imposter syndrome really does suck. But these are some tips that could be helpful. Of course, you do not have to take any of these to heart or take them very seriously. And if you have any suggestions of your own, please feel free to drop them in the comments!
